Sophie Moon

I earned my undergraduate degree in English, but I discovered my passion for business during my internship with the Foreign Commercial Service Team at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. I was drawn to the MSM because it bridges the gap for international students who want to build careers in the U.S. The experiential learning component was especially valuable. It taught me how to analyze the underlying motivations behind a company’s business challenges and strengthened the soft skills I rely on to build strong relationships.

Gies has been able to support my mental health and well-being by just fostering an open community of dialogue that goes into if I am having concerns with anything personal, academic, or professional. Academic advisers as well as faculty and staff really show a great sense of support and consideration for things that I may be going through in my life.

My favorite memories were the times spent together as a cohort, whether in between classes, at get-togethers, or studying in groups. To future students: you are part of this program to graduate with more skills than you started with. To do this: Seek help if needed. If you are falling behind in a course or having a hard time outside of class, get support from professors, faculty, and staff. They are there to help you succeed! Also, take advantage of opportunities, like networking events, career fairs, and informational sessions.

The pace of the MSM was perfect for me. While you’re in it, it feels like a lot, but it was quick and reflective of the pace of the business world. I use my MSM degree every day, whether it be directly applying the business acumen that I acquired in the program, or by using interpersonal skills that were sharpened during my time at Gies. My MSM degree helped me hit the ground running as a new employee.
